Nags Head received its name according to a famous legend from pirates. The legend claims that pirates used to tie lanterns around the necks of ponies, also known as “nags” and walked them along the dunes to simulate bobbing lights of a boat anchored nearby. Captains of ships out at sea would see this ruse and then come to shore, thinking they too could anchor for the night, only to get their ships stuck on the sandbar, resulting in pirates attacking and plundering the stuck ships for all their valuables.
