Kill Devil Hills name is said to come from two different legend. The first legend claims the town first got its name due to the number of ships that would wreck along the shores of the Outer Banks. The cargo these ships were carrying (mostly rum) would wash up on the sand, and the local population would find the rum so strong that it was “strong enough to kill the devil.” Another legend claims that the local man stupidly attempted to extort money from the devil. Consequently, the devil entrapped the pan at the top of the hill that also houses the Wilbur and Orville Wright memorial.
